The Applications Engineer / Database Administrator, under the direction of the Database Administration Manager is responsible for providing technical support in all aspects of design/customization, implementation/deployment and maintenance of firm applications and working with the Sr. Database Administrator in providing firm-wide database support including the design, installation, monitoring, maintenance, and performance tuning of all production databases while ensuring high levels of availability.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with other IT teams and application sponsors on application and database initiatives
  • Manage the planning, design, documentation, configuration and implementation of a defined set of applications
  • Manage the entire application and database life cycle including actively monitoring for application and database patches, service packs and upgrades
  • Ensure proper testing is completed prior to implementing any application or database change – produce reports & documentation for all testing efforts, results, activities, data, logging, & tracking
  • Test fixes and perform post-resolution follow-ups to ensure problems have been adequately resolved.
  • Record, track, and document the problem-solving process, including all successful and unsuccessful decisions made, and actions taken, through to final resolution
  • Evaluate documented resolutions and analyze trends for ways to prevent repeated future problems
  • Communicate application and database problems and issues to key stakeholders, including management, development teams, end users, and unit leaders
  • Maintain and address performance of all new and existing databases across the organization
  • Post knowledge base articles and frequently asked questions on company intranet to assist in problem resolution
  • Conduct research into software application products and services in support of development and purchasing efforts. Help to plan and implement systems
  • Assist in the support of any firm application when called upon to do so
  • Assist in training and guiding engineers and IT support staff in supporting & managing databases
  • Create thorough documentation for all aspects of application configuration, deployment and support. Assist in doing the same for databases
  • Provide 2nd & 3rd level technical support for applications. Provide 2nd level support for databases
  • Respond in a timely fashion to escalated issues (tickets)
  • Update tracking systems such as project, time, ticket and change management in a complete and timely fashion
  • Help to plan and implement systems and services that differentiate and keep us on the leading edge of technology
  • Consult with IT leaders and engineers from other law firms and learn from their experiences. This would include posting on relevant forums such as ILTA and PASS. Interact with engineers and management from other firms to gain knowledge on specific products and technologies
  • Confer with end-users, clients, management, attorneys, or business professionals to define application and database business requirements
  • Help find technologies that enable attorneys to work more efficiently with their clients
  • Proactively evaluate new and/or alternative application and database solutions to better support the firm’s business objectives
  • Assist in assessing and developing long-term strategic goals for production databases in conjunction with data owners and department leaders
  • Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets
  • Adhere to firm change control procedures
  • Establish appropriate end-user database access control levels
  • Overtime may be required and on call after hours may be required
  • Onsite regular attendance, and punctuality

Education & Experience:

  • College diploma or university degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Five plus years of work experience preferred
  • Knowledge of trends in technology relating to software applications and databases required
  • Strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices required
  • Working technical experience with designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting database servers
  • Hands-on database tuning and troubleshooting experience
  • Very strong customer service orientation required. Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies required
  • Solid grounding in core enterprise applications including directory services, enterprise mail, remote access, mobile devices, virtualization (server, desktop & application), database management, document management and office automation required
  • Knowledge of network, server and desktop operating systems required
  • Working technical knowledge of applications specific to the legal environment including litigation support preferred
  • Strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities required
  • Strong organizational, written and oral communication skills required
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is required
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is required
