Database Administrator

Location: Northeast Pittsburgh, PA

Job Type: Contract

The Database Administrator (DBA) will develop, implement, maintain, and administer database solutions to meet the operational requirements of the company.


  • Setup and maintain stand-alone enterprise database servers along with backup and recovery processes
  • Setup and maintain database servers associated with vendor provided COTS applications
  • For new databases or updates to existing databases author:
    • Specification documents which describe server and database architectures and schemas
    • Commissioning documents (i.e. performance tests, security tests, data migration tests, etc.)
  • Using advanced working knowledge of SQL Server and Windows Server, execute; development, operating, maintenance, and security (adding/removing users, local vs. AD accounts, SQL & Windows permissions, firewall configuration, TCP/IP configuration, remote configuration) tasks related to DBMS and Operating System
  • Develop server-side programs and scripts using strong SQL and scripting (PowerShell preferred) knowledge
  • Execute tasks for SQL Server installation and configuration using SQL scripts
  • Execute tasks for SQL Server backup and restore (planning, implementing, reviewing, and troubleshooting backups as well as configuring SQL Server Recovery Models)
  • Provide SQL Server and database troubleshooting (knowledge of basic SQL Server errors, ability to interpret SQL Server/SSIS/Windows error logs, stored procedures)
  • Using working knowledge of the Microsoft BI stack (SSRS, SSIS), support Company’s Data Engineers
  • Execute commissioning; support validation team’s installation qualification (IQ), operational qualification (OQ), and performance qualification (PQ) activities
  • Collaborate with IT, system architects, applications analysts, and others to understand business and industry requirements for database implementation and production support

Education & Experience:

  • Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field of study
  • 7+ years of experience in the Essential Job Functions of the contract role (described above)
  • 3+ years of experience administering Microsoft SQL Servers
  • 3+ years of writing Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Demonstrable problem-solving skills and ability to work in both collaborative and independent work situations
  • Preferred are Microsoft Certifications related to SQL Server
  • Ability to understand FDA cGMP, 21 CFR Part 11, and related regulations associated with Bio/Pharmaceutical/Medical product manufacturing
