Engineering Manager

Position Overview: As an Engineering Manager in the Web Applications team, you’ll lead a team of talented backend and front-end web engineers as they build our Knowledge and Learning Pathways applications. These applications allow our customers to develop and distribute mission-critical training and reference materials across their huge, geographically distributed workforces.

Job Responsibilities: • Manage a wonderful team of dedicated and talented full stack web engineers as well as coach and mentor junior engineers. • Build new features and maintain the existing functionality in our suite of web applications using technologies like AWS Lambda, Express, React, Redux, Kubernetes and more. • Work closely with counterparts from the Product and Design teams to plan elegant and delightful solutions that your team will take on.

Candidate Requirements: • Minimum 5+ years of engineering experience and 1+ years of engineering management experience. • Prior experience building and releasing complex web applications using either JavaScript or Python. • Excellent ability to communicate, organize, delegate, and give honest feedback. • You’re ready to roll up your sleeves and work through technical challenges with your team. • You have great coding abilities, are able to design complex systems, and can help others produce great technical designs also. • You care deeply about building high-quality, beautiful, intuitive applications.

Bonus Points: • You have startup experience. • Experience working with hybrid on-shore / off-shore engineering teams.

Progression Expectations: Within 1 month… • Onboarding program designed to get you up to speed on business, vision and team and gain an understanding about how your role fits into the broader organization • Engineering focused onboarding program to learn about our development and deployment process • Participate in weekly scrum ceremonies to engage with fellow members of engineering, product, and design and learn our collaboration process • Deploy your first bug fix or feature enhancement to production • Get to know your team members, initiate weekly one on ones. Within 3 months… • Gain understanding of the high-level architecture of the Learning Pathways components • Learn the development / deployment process hands-on and suggest ways to improve it • Understand the product roadmap for the next 12-18 months and the market drivers behind it • Participate / guide the design of new features / components • Make staffing decisions for the team, both internal and outsources. Within 6 months… • Work as a thought partner with product; find the best trade-offs in terms of time, quality, and functionality when solving customer problems • Broaden your knowledge by having a high-level understanding of the architecture of a few code bases from different parts of the stack • Collaborate with team members on their career development plans, coaching and mentoring them daily • Lead the team in delivering on the roadmap, eliminating roadblocks, and coordinating cross team initiatives. Within 12 months… • Consistently lead projects to successful engineering and company outcomes through a combination of team delegation, coaching and rolling your sleeves when needed • Actively participate in the Engineering Managers forum and cross-team engineering architecture discussions. Influence architectural, process and architectural decisions in the engineering organization • Structure your team for optimal performance and innovation in collaboration with your manager.

Environment and additional requirements: • General office environment working remotely, supporting team members in various time zones • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer • Minimal travel required, less than 10%.
